I'm teaching a Drawing 1 class this semester, and earlier this week taught my students how to effectively shade WITHOUT smudging/using a tortillian. I made up this worksheet in Photoshop to give them a tactile reference to what we talked about (we're also going to discuss the Elements of Art starting with Line, Value, Shape, and Form).
It's not terribly in depth, but I thought I'd throw it up here in case anyone is confused about what value is exactly, and the first steps of shading

WORKSHEET ANSWERS: Value is: the range of light (white) to dark (black) Light source: where/what angle the light is coming from What is the difference between shape and form? A shape is a flat, 2D definition of space, while a form is a 3D shape.
That is why Jeremy is teaching me organization skills nowadays. He may not sound like it, but I think he is getting tired of me always losing my papers in my drawers.
